The word "Adirondacks" comes from a native american word meaning "Those that eat bark". It was a somewhat derogatory term used by surrounding tribes to describe the tribe living in the mountains where life was difficult. In the winter they resorted to eating the tree bark.

After my last backpacking experience I have to also wonder why anyone would choose to live there. As beautiful as it is, the terrain is rough and there are a lot of rules - though the Indians didn't have to deal with park rangers...
